Universal Nucleation Behavior of Sheared Systems

چکیده
Using molecular simulations and a modified Classical Nucleation Theory, we study the nucleation, under flow, of variety liquids: different water models, Lennard-Jones hard sphere colloids. Our approach enables us to analyze wide range shear rates inaccessible brute-force simulations. results reveal that variation nucleation rate with is universal. A simplified version theory successfully captures non-monotonic temperature dependence behavior, which shown originate from violation Stokes-Einstein relation.

Extension of classical nucleation theory for uniformly sheared systems.
Nucleation is an out-of-equilibrium process that can be strongly affected by the presence of external fields. In this paper, we report a simple extension of classical nucleation theory to systems submitted to an homogeneous shear flow. The theory involves accounting for the anisotropy of the critical nucleus formation and introduces a shear-rate-dependent effective temperature. This extended th...
متن کاملNucleation in Sheared Granular Matter.
We present an experiment on crystallization of packings of macroscopic granular spheres. This system is often considered to be a model for thermally driven atomic or colloidal systems. Cyclically shearing a packing of frictional spheres, we observe a first order phase transition from a disordered to an ordered state. The ordered state consists of crystallites of mixed fcc and hcp symmetry that ...

The movie shows the nucleation of spheres in the shear cell. For visualization the spheres that are in a crystalline state are shown in a rotating side view. Color indicates the crystal symmetry. At the top right the current state is specified by the global packing fraction, shear cycle, and the number of crystalline spheres. The end of the plateau in the packing fraction is marked by the appea...
متن کاملCapture-zone scaling in island nucleation: universal fluctuation behavior.
In island nucleation and growth, the distribution of capture zones (in essence proximity cells) can be described by a simple expression generalizing the Wigner surmise (power-law rise, Gaussian decay) from random matrix theory that accounts for spacing distributions in a host of fluctuation phenomena. Its single adjustable parameter, the power-law exponent, can be simply related to the critical...
متن کاملNucleation and crystal growth in sheared granular sphere packings.
We investigate the nucleation of ordered phases, their symmetries, and distributions in dense frictional hard sphere packings as a function of particle volume fraction ϕ, by imposing cyclic shear and constant applied pressure conditions. We show, with internal imaging, that the nucleating crystallites in the bulk consist of 10-60 spheres with hexagonal close packed (hcp) order and nonspherical ...
